BT Radianz Extranet Adds 40 Countries
BT Radianz has announced Extended Reach, a program that will extend its frame relay network from the current 20 countries into about 40 more in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. The announcement underscores how electronic trading is poised to grow beyond North American and European financial centres and into emerging markets.
As part of the program, the unit of U.K. telecommunications giant BT plans to increase the sites connected to its network from 10,000 to 20,000 or 30,000 over the next three to four years, says Christopher Church, EVP of strategic client development and industry relations for BT Radianz in New York. "Many of the local niche providers have global ambitions, and they want to use us to get to a broader audience," says Church.
Initially, the service will connect buy- and sell-side participants in major markets with exchanges and other execution venues in emerging markets. Later it will provide connections among the buy side and sell side in the emerging markets. The network will also provide links to local providers of financial information.
Much of the rationale for Extended Reach, which was announced Wednesday, is to serve money managers seeking to boost their performance by investing in non-traditional markets. The buy side sees high-speed access and electronic trading as aiding its ability to reach these markets. "We're getting pressure from broker-dealers who are trying to service the hedge funds, and we're getting pressure from the hedge funds to build connections to these markets," Church says.
Another aspect of BT Radianz's broadening of its extranet is to take Proximity, a service introduced last year to lower the latency in market participants' connections to market venues (Securities Industry News, June 20), beyond the U.S. and Western Europe. Next week, Proximity will be launched in Asia, and over time it will be introduced in Latin America and Eastern Europe, though no timetable has been set. "We'll do Extended Reach, we'll understand the market, and then we'll do Proximity as the market demands it," says Church.
