NYSE Euronext volumes rise in May but well below year-ago levels

NYSE Euronext global volumes made a strong gain in May from April but remained nearly 12 percent down from a year earlier.


New York - NYSE Euronext global derivatives volume averaged 9.3 million contracts in May, up 12.9 percent from the prior month but down 11.9% from a year earlier, the exchange said.

European derivatives products average daily volume, at 5.0 million contracts, registered a 17.6 percent increase in the month but was still 22.1% lower than in May 2011.

There was better news on the U.S. derivatives front, where equity options ADV of 4.2 million contracts in May increased 4.7 percent from a year earlier and 7.7 percent from the prior month. NYSE Euronext said its U.S. options exchanges accounted for 26.7 percent of total U.S. consolidated equity options trading in May 2012, up from both a month and a year earlier.
