TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) said Thursday its second-quarter net profit soared 65% to a record NT$40.28 billion, from NT$24.44 billion a year earlier, boosted by strong wafer shipments.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer by revenue, said its earnings per share for the three months ended June 30 was NT$1.55 a share, up from NT$0.94.

The result was higher with the average NT$37.0 billion forecast of eight analysts.

Analysts had expected TSMC's net profit to jump because of higher chip prices and continued improvement in demand as the global economy recovered.

The company's second-quarter consolidated revenue rose 41% to a record NT$104.96 billion from NT$74.21 billion a year earlier, based on its monthly revenue filings.
