National chain store sales slipped 0.2% in the first four weeks of April from March, according to Redbook Research's latest indicator, released Tuesday.

The index's fall compared with a targeted 0.1% gain.

The Johnson Redbook Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales for the period were up 3.2% from last year, compared with a 3.5% targeted gain.

Redbook said sales for the month were short of retailers' target as results were hurt by the early Easter holiday as well as tough comparisons with the year-earlier period.

Sales for the week rose 2.9% year-over-year.
