At the weekend: Russia's Kudrin says no alternative to the dollar yet
First Published Saturday, 11 July 2009 from Need to Know News
Russia's finance minister, Alexei Kudrin, played down speculation the dollar could be soon replaced as a reserve currency, saying the US unit is in "good shape".
Kudrin said it is "too early to speak of an alternative" to the dollar as a global reserve currency.
Kudrin was speaking on the sidelines of this weekend's G8 meeting of finance ministers in Lecce, Italy.
His tone contrasted with previous rhetoric from Russia's president Dmitry Medvedev, who has called for the creation of a basket of currencies to act as a reserve unit.
