Employment in the UK's public sector increased by 15,000 to 6 million in the first quarter of 2009, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The public sector figures now include employment in Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Lloyds Banking Group as the ONS reclassified them into this group on 19th February 2009, effective from 13th October 2008.
Following this decision the ONS revised Q4 employment estimates in 2008 to include Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Lloyds Banking Group, thereby boosting the previous employment figure by 230,000 non-seasonally adjusted.
