Russian Pres. Medvedev's Missile Remarks "Misguided" -- US Defense Sec.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said comments by Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on missile deployment were "unnecessary and misguided." Medvedev was quoted in French daily newspaper Le Figaro as saying Russia had no choice but to deploy missiles andradar systemsin Kaliningrad. He said Russiacould cancel such plansif US President-elect Barack Obamaabandons plans for a missile defense system in Central Europe. Gates called Medvedev's comments 'provocative,' and 'hardly the welcome a new American administration deserved.'
