  • Talk of Equity Markets boost on likelihood of FOMC rate hikes? Posted:11/07/2009 12:58 GMT by NeedToKnowNews
There is some talk that equities markets are rallying and short end bonds are falling because some players believe the FOMC is likely to boost rates at some point in the not-too-distant future. Extrapolated from this notion is the notion of an economic recovery...also sooner than later.
While last week's Non-Farm Payrolls data come in much better than expected, it was hardly the stuff of recovery. In fact, the revisions out of BLS have been for the worse for the past several months. Add to this the FED's statement, in the past several FOMC rate decisions, that they would hold down rates "for an extended period" and it looks like the rally in equities may be a bit premature.
However, the rise in bond rates can be traced directly to supply and likely not to the notion the FED will hike rates any time soon.
