PREVIEW: UK Consumer Prices to Show Annual Inflation Rate Falling to 4.9%

The October UK inflation rate is expected to head down from September's 16-year peak, with the pace of declines accelerating closer to the end of the year.

The Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) rate is seen falling to 4.9% year-over-year in October, down from 5.2% in September, a rather modest decline given record monthly drops in wholesale producer price inflation, coupled with the Bank of England's heightened concerns about the inflation rate falling below one percent in two years.

"After October, I would expect the inflation rate to fall very, very sharply," said Howard Archer, economist at Global Insight, who said persistent increases in utility bills will offset broader price weakness.

Alan Clarke, economist at BNP Paribas, also said the multi-year high prices in food and energy are still, to some degree, being passed along in restaurants and other services, and could take another six months to fully work their way out of the economy.

Clarke is looking for the annual CPI rate to fall to 2% by mid-2009, while Archer is forecasting that the rate could reach 0.5% in a year's time.

Clarke is looking for the Retail Price Index to record a sharper monthly drop due to escalating price decreases in the UK housing market. He is forecasting RPI to fall to a rate of 4.4% in October from September's 5%, a 17-year high.

Need To Know New's Scream Audio will broadcast the CPI report live at 0930 GMT on Tuesday, November 18. Scream will first broadcast the annual CPI rate, followed by: monthly CPI, core CPI year-over-year, core month-over-month, annual RPI, RPI month-over-month and then the RPIX.
