The future of General Motors' European subsidiaries, including its Vahuxhall plants at Ellesmere Port and Luton in the UK, and its Opel factories in Germany, was thrown into confusion when a German minister floated the possibility that none of the bids on the table for the business might succeed, reports the Independent.

Fraud is soaring during the recession and must be made a police priority, the senior officer heading the national drive against economic crime said.The number of reported frauds rose by 64% during the past financial year, with people from all walks of life falling victim.

GlaxoSmithKline said they are to buy Stiefel Laboratories for up to $3.6 bln and the IEA forecast that oil demand is unlikely to pick up again before next year. In European equities markets, Germany led the way down with the DAX dropping 2.49% and the Footsie trailing behind at 1.14% lower.

BT will freeze the pay of all employees this year, including its most senior executives, the telecoms giant announced yesterday, says the Independent. The company said that its senior executives would have their pay frozen, but it has not been decided whether to pay their bonuses this year, adds the Times. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has unveiled plans to attract foreign businesses to the British capital by offering them free office space for a year, according to the Telegraph. Investigators from the European Commission raided the offices of Électricité de France (EDF) yesterday seeking evidence of price-fixing in the French electricity market, says the Times.
