US shares closed higher thanks to a late session rally and surprisingly good profit data from Hewlett-Packard. The Dow was up 1.8%. The S&P ended 1% higher. The Nasdaq eeked out a gain of 0.1% despite a 8.9% jump in Yahoo on the resignation of CEO Jerry Yang. The market shrugged off a record decline in PPI. Asian shares were mixed, with economic concerns continuing to weigh on sentiment. The Nikkei dropped 0.7%. The ASX fell 0.9%. The Hang Seng gained 0.5% after moving up more than 2% late in the session. European shares were called slightly higher, but futures were paring gains into the equity market open. The DAX future was up 0.9%. The CAC future gained 0.4%. The European economic calendar focuses on the UK, where minutes from the BOE are due at 0930 GMT, and CBI November orders are scheduled for release at 11 GMT. Both will be broadcast live on Need to Know News' Scream Audio. Spanish GDP is expected at 8 GMT. The dollar lost some of its attraction, but it will remain the "ultimate safe-haven" in the current market environment, according to one trader. USD/JPY was off 0.3%. EUR/USD gained 0.1%. Cable was little changed. The yen, another safety net, fell. EUR/JPY slipped 0.2%. GBP/JPY was off 0.3%. Bonds got more grip as investors worried about the global economy. The 10yr Bund future set a record of 199.30 for the current contract at the open, but it pared gains to trade up 40 ticks at 119.15. In the cash market, the 10yr Bund was flat at 3.66%. The 2yr Schatz fell 2bps to 2.15%. The 10yr Gilt was off 5bps at 4.04%. The 2yr was down 3bps at 2.06%. The 10yr JGB fell 1bp to 1.48%. The 10yr T-note was off 2bps. Oil turned south as prospects for fuel demand continued to fade. WTI was off 0.2% at $54.30 in range-bound trading after ducking under the $54 handle overnight. Brent was off 0.5% at $51.60.
